A Family Friendly Day in Cape May

Looking for a fun and memorable day trip from Philadelphia? Cape May is the ideal destination for families seeking a mix of adventure, relaxation, and good food. Our recent (and 1st!) trip was a blast, and we’ve put together an itinerary that hits all the highlights of this charming seaside town. Here’s how you can make the most out of a day in Cape May!

Bonus points for the encouraged gross motor activities!

1. Morning Fun at Cape May Zoo

Our day began with a visit to the Cape May County Park & Zoo, a fantastic spot that’s perfect for families and doesn’t cost a dime (though donations are appreciated)! We arrived early to beat the crowds and take full advantage of the cooler morning temperatures. The zoo is not only home to a variety of animals but is also surrounded by several playgrounds suitable for all ages. Whether your little ones are toddlers or tweens, they’ll find plenty to keep them entertained. It’s a great way to break up the drive and let the kids burn off some energy before heading to the next destination or enjoying lunch under one of many shaded picnic areas surrounded by nature.

2. Delicious BBQ at Beach Plum Farm

The pork sandwich, better than Dinic's!

After the zoo, we headed to Beach Plum Farm for their Sunday BBQ. This picturesque garden offers a delightful setting where kids can run around and explore. The farm’s charm is enhanced by its wide-open spaces and rustic feel. Our kids had a blast feeding the chickens, which was definitely the highlight of their day. The BBQ was absolutely delicious, and we loved the fresh, farm-to-table fare. Don't come at me Philly friends, but I would pick their pork sandwich over Dinic's! It’s an excellent spot for a relaxed lunch, and the atmosphere is perfect for unwinding with family.

3. Shopping at Washington Street Mall

With bellies full and energy restored, we made our way to the Washington Street Mall. This delightful shopping district is lined with charming boutiques and eateries, all set in a tree-lined square adorned with festive lights and a fountain to make a wish. The best part? No cars are allowed, making it a safe and enjoyable space for families to stroll and shop. Our favorite stop was Whale’s Tale, a shop with a fantastic kids’ section where M picked out a moon ball and L picked a small habitat with a built in magnifying glass to catch some bugs with. It’s a great place to pick up a special souvenir or just let the kids have some fun exploring.

4. Scenic Tour with Revolution Rail Company

Next up was a tour with Revolution Rail Company. This unique activity offers a mix of exercise, history, and nature. The rail bikes provide a fun way to explore the area, and the tour is accommodating for everyone, from newborns to grandparents. We were thrilled one of our followers worked with us to problem solve brining their 90-year-old mother on their own adventure, and they all had a wonderful time. The tour takes you through beautiful landscapes and provides interesting insights into Cape May’s history. It’s an engaging and educational experience for the whole family.

5. Unexpected Gem: George’s Place

As the day wound down, we were ready for a quick and easy dinner. We strolled past a few spots packed with hour long wait lists then stumbled upon George’s Place, a modest Greek restaurant by the water. What looked like an unassuming diner turned out to serve the freshest gyros we’ve ever tasted. It was a delightful reminder that sometimes, the best experiences come from unexpected places.

Our day in Cape May was packed with fun and adventure, and we hope this itinerary helps you plan your own memorable day trip. From the free zoo and charming farm to unique shopping and scenic tours, Cape May has something for everyone. And don’t forget to keep an open mind about where you eat—you might just discover a hidden gem!

Enjoy your trip to Cape May, and feel free to share your own favorite spots and experiences!
